Don’t assume that everywhere you travel you will find plenty of people who speak your language or the English language. Consider learning the local language and be nicely surprised at how far it will get you. Locals who can see you are trying hard to communicate will often go out of their way to help you. Greetings, numbers and directions are the easiest to learn so why wouldn’t you?
When planning an overseas trip do consider the language and give some thought to learning some of the local language. To get started visit your local library or search on the Internet, you may be surprised at how inexpensive it can be. you may even find a local language class to suit, check your local papers.
Do you have an ipod? have you thought about getting one? well if you are thinking of learning a new language, now may be the time. A relatively new and increasingly popular learning technique is learning via ipod. Your language of choice is simply downloaded onto your ipod so you can learn any place, any time.
Begin with greetings and phrases such as How are You? my name is, can you help me? and some common destination phrases, such as post office and pharmacy, cafe or restaurant, train station and taxi.
If you consider what you will be doing while you are on holiday and the things you may need to ask for, why not start with those? Learning a foreign language just takes a little practice, and the more you use your new skills the better you will become.
If you have a destination in mind why not consider a language holiday? A number of companies now offer a language and culture immersion, you live within the local community and positively cant help but be surrounded by the language and culture 24/7, the longer you spend the better your language becomes, be warned however it does get harder to go home after this type of holiday.
Wherever you travel it will be a benefit to learn at least some of the local language. It can really make a big difference to how you interact and how the locals interact with you.
Why don’t you start today? learning a new language is fascinating and good brain exercise. You never know who you may be able to help with your language skills, a tourist in your own country or a tourist struggling on vacation. Its a great feeling to be understood in a foreign country. Try it, you may be surprised where it could take you.
