Just about every poker player messes with their poker chips when they play. They’ll stack ‘em and shuffle ‘em, they’ll flip ‘em and twirl ‘em; and when it comes to betting they’ll splash ‘em or place them in neat stacks. If you’re paying attention, watching how people play with their poker chips can add some extra cash to your bankroll. Here’s a couple of poker chip tells to watch out for.

Wait for Them to Stop

You find these poker players wherever you play. They are always moving their chips. The shuffle is popular. In fact these gamers mix shuffling and betting in a subtle pattern. But suddenly you see them stop moving their chips immediately after placing a bet. You can safely assume that they are not expecting to win anything.

The people who know that they have a good set of cards are unperturbed. They fiddle with their chips with a satisfied air. But the people who have suddenly stopped playing with their chips are obviously on edge. They are wishing that you are not going to call. Now you will need to up your bets, as these unfortunate players are doomed to fold.

Throwing down the chips

Watch carefully for this one. We are all familiar with the fun loving players who just toss the chips into the pot just to hear the exciting clink of the chips. There are others who neatly pile the chips. Now what if without warning you see these people throw caution to the wind and toss the chips into the pot instead of stacking them in their usual orderly manner. You know that something is up.

Remember that in poker strong is weak and weak is strong so when you have a careful player make an uncharacteristically aggressive move, you’re probably looking at a bluff. Raise. At the very least you’ll gain more information about your adversary so you’ll know what it means the next time they splash the pot.

What you are looking for with Poker tells are changes in a person’s playing norms. Keep a close eye on the rest of the poker group and note any unexpected behavior. Follow your instincts and raise the stakes, you will very likely soon find out what is going on.

As you play you will notice the people who love playing with those chips. They practice new tricks at home until playing around with their chips is just a habit with them. When they get into a predicament they unconsciously stop playing with their chips. This is when you can cash in big.
