It is by no means easy to stop smoking cold turkey. But if you seriously make an attempt, it will be possible and will very effectively veer you towards a no-smoking life.
Though there are various ways of giving up smoking the most preferred to do it is by tackling one cigarette in one situation. This is considered the easiest but it definitely is not the most effective. Do you really count everyday the number of cigarettes you smoke? Then what is the point in just reducing one per day, it is not clever! It could easily happen that you have an extra cigarette on one day and then the entire routine gets messed up.
The most effective way of giving up smoking if you have the courage to do so, is by going in for the cold turkey approach. Cold turkey basically is the complete stopping of cigarettes no matter how addicted you are to it. This method is obviously more tough on the hardened smokers than the rest who might smoke only few in an entire day.
It is obvious that cold turkey is a method of freeing oneself from the addiction in a way in which the individual has to suffer both mental agony as well as bodily pain. Giving up an obsession all of a sudden is certainly a very stressful and difficult task to do. The whole process is difficult because of the nicotine present in the cigarettes. The nicotine is a very strong addictive agent and when consumed, it stimulates the receptor cells in the brain. Thus, when you tend to stop it completely from entering into your system, your system would not react to it in a favourable way.
But there are some ways that can make cold turkey bearable and yield the results that you want - i.e. lead you to a smoke-free life. Bear in mind that stopping smoking with cold turkey does not mean that you will simply get up from your bed one sweet day and decide randomly that you want to give up smoking and go cold turkey. If you do that, nothing will be achieved at all. You will be back to the cigarette in no time. Actually, if you want to stop smoking cold turkey, then you will need to make some advance preparations.
These preparations have to be made a fortnight before the day you have decided is right for you to start cold turkey. Make sure this date is marked out in the calendar and look on it as the day that will change your life. First you need to think positively about life. Have a small notebook and jot down in it all the benefits that you are going to reap as result of giving up smoking. The effect it will have on friends and family, the goodness it will bring about in your health and life. Besides this ensure that you drink plenty of water. The body will require a lot of fluids before going cold turkey.
One evening prior to the day you have assigned for the cold turkey, keep your fridge stocked with carrots and celery - they will help if you get the craving for the cigarette. You must also stock on foods you like to eat, and get some good DVDs if you want. Throw all your cigarette packets away.
On the D-day, begin with a small meditation on the importance of your quitting the smoking habit. Then carry on life as usual. Throughout the day - the first day - you will feel the pangs several times. But, it must be your resilience not to succumb to the craving. Chomp on the veggies you have stocked, or divert your mind into other things. Think about people you are for. The craving will subside; cravings for smoking addiction do not last more than fifteen minutes at a time.
During the following days you will discover that the desire to smoke would have greatly reduced and finally a day will arrive when the urge o smoke is little or almost non-existent. This would be the day of reaping the rich rewards that the tough task of cold turkey has brought about.
