Both conventional and alternative stop smoking medicine are available in the market. This is a comparative analysis of the two kinds.
Quit smoking medicines can be classified as two kinds, they are conventional and alternative medication. The conventional medication is what is prescribed by the doctors. This type of medication is supplemented with other smoke cessation therapies. This means that the drugs on their own are not really effective. Alternative medication is on the rise in today’s world and it is nothing but solutions that are prepared from natural herbs and is considered to be safe and effective.
Conventional medicines have been in use for a very long time but only recently have they been really developed. Many famous brands of medicines like Chantix, Zyban, Wellbutrin and NicVAX are recommended to smokers. The common factor among these medicines is that they all have antidepressant properties and the body will slowly become immune to them. After this happens the effect that remains is not very effective. The urges are only controlled to a certain extent.
Almost all doctors agree to the fact that the medicines prescribed to the smokers have little more than the placebo effect. Although these medicines are antidepressants, after a period of time the body becomes immune to them. Therefore all that is left in the medicine is its placebo effect. Moreover these conventional medicines can help mild smokers put an end to their habits but when it comes to the chain smokers, these medicines can be ineffective.
That is the reason why doctors always prescribe their stop smoking medicine in addition to some therapy like the nicotine patch. The nicotine patch itself is controversial, because it does contain nicotine. The effectiveness of using nicotine to wean away a nicotine addiction is highly debated even in the medical field itself. Behavior therapies are also prescribed, but their effectiveness is highly subjective.
Alternative medications that are used are nothing but herbal remedies. These herbal remedies are more than antidepressants, unlike the conventional medicines, these herbal medicines act in various ways. They work in a way that helps the smoker to develop a dislike for the property nicotine and this in turn helps the person get rid of the nicotine addiction. They are also considered to be safe antidepressants as they are entirely natural and are suited for any type of person.
The damage that the body has suffered due to the smoking habit can be repaired using these herbal medicines. This process is a slow one and in some cases the healing process has lasted up to ten years. The healing time differs depending on the extent of the damage caused in the body.
One of the common herbal medicines that are used against smoking is Lobelia. This has a taste which is very much like tobacco, but in contrast it is not addictive. There are cigarettes to help you stop smoking with lobelia inside them. When compared to nicotine cigarettes these give the same thrill but the addiction and the harmful effects caused on the mind and body by the nicotine is not there. Wort, Kava Kava and chamomile are few of the other herbs which are used commonly.
Alternative stop smoking medicine is showing encouraging results in tests and in actual use. FDA has still to approve this kind of medicine, but the general acceptance of the effectiveness of herbal medicine is its prime USP.
