The problem with high blood pressure or hypertension to give it it’s proper name is that very often people are unaware they are suffering from it until they start suffering the side effects. This is one of the reasons why it is called the “silent killer”, so often knowing what could cause high blood pressure and preventing it is the best way to treat it.
When thinking about what could cause high blood pressure, every person is different, there are a number of known causes including; excess alcohol, excess salt, excess sodium, stress and anxiety (up to a point) .
A big one is salt. It’s in most everything you eat or drink so you need to carefully read the labels of the cans and boxes your food comes in. If you cook and eat mostly fresh food you have less to worry about, just do your best not to add to much as you cook.
Being overweight, not just a pound or two, but 15% - 20% or more. Being overweight leads to many health problems including high blood pressure, diabetes, problems with your joints (all that extra stress on the body), and more.
Drinking alcohol, in anything more than moderation, besides other health problems, can play a part in raising your blood pressure. More and more reports are telling us that drinking one glass of wine actually is beneficial in lowering your blood pressure, the “key” to those studies are “one glass”, more than that does not help, in fact it hurts you.
The contraceptive pill can cause the blood pressure to rise so it is important that all women no matter how young they are have their blood pressure checked on a regular basis.
People should also be aware that many medications also raise your blood pressure and certain combinations are dangerous. Doctors and pharmacists are very aware of this and carefully monitor the medications you take. This is why it is very important for you to go to the same pharmacist for all of your medication.
The only true way of knowing whether you have high blood pressure or not is by having it checked by a doctor. This is a painless procedure, and every adult should have their blood pressure taken at least on an annual basis if not more often.
